Installing the Custom Arthemia Theme

30 August 2009 96 Comments

Building your site in WordPress is easy and quick enough without a custom theme… but several of you have asked about how I made changes to the Arthemia theme, to get it working the way I wanted. This post is a quick video recap of installing the Free Arthemia WordPress theme, with the edits in place.

Before anyone gets started on this, as much as I wish I could,  I simply cannot answer “site specific” support requests on it, due to EVERY site being different! It will take me 30-60 minutes to help each person! I changed this theme to work for myself, and it relies heavily on using the posts and pages in WordPress, the same way I have done on my own site.

The directions below assume you already have your post reviews in place, as well as the phpBay plugin installed. Also, if you are not familiar with how to use the “Image” custom field in Arthemia, you should read the read me file in the theme as well. The theme itself relies heavily on the custom field, and this theme edit uses it in several places also.

  1. Download and Install the Slightly Modded version of Arthemia to your WordPress backend.
  2. Download and Install the List Tags Plugin.
  3. Make SURE you already have your site setup with categories and pages in place.

Edit for ClarificationIn the video, I show how to use a custom field for displaying phpBay plugin driven results on your site, the way the theme is coded. You DO NOT HAVE to use this method… it WILL work just fine if you use phpBay as it is intended. It is simply a shortcut I USE, to make the site more flexible for my own needs.

Edit 2 For Further Clarification – If you prefer to use the phpBay code within your posts like you are used to doing, it works perfectly fine! You are NOT required to use it if you have a market that comes from several different categories.

Images FAQ For Arthemia (Also at the link above)

im-FAQ 1 : How to get the thumbnail image resizer working??

Actually the explanation above is clear enough for you to get the thumbnail working, but in case you missed something, you could read these step-by-step to-do list. Before you start, make sure that the image is already there, located in your own server. The script can not generate thumbnails if your image is located outside your server (eg. Flickr photos, Picassa, etc.)

  1. Add a custom field in the post. The custom field key MUST be Image (letter cases are important).
  2. Fill the custom field value with the path of your image. It MUST start with wp-content I repeat it MUST start with wp-content. If you have the image located at http://www.yourblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/file_name.jpg then the key value of the custom field MUST be wp-content/uploads/2008/06/file_name.jpg (Notice there is no http://www.yourblog.com/ in the value)

    Hi Mark,

    Thank you so much for taking the time to make this Arthemia Theme video! Your detailed help and guidance, as always, is most appreciated! :)

    However, the video isn’t working on my end – it appears to be just an image file and not video? Anyone else having this problem? :)

    Hi Mark

    As you know, I have this theme installed on one of my newest sites and it has made my life soooooo much easier when it comes to putting together a new site. It now takes me around 2 hours to add a full sites worth of content as opposed to the 10 before:)

    Cheers, Mark!

  • Mark (author) said:

    @Cherie – Yes, you will first need to pull out any existing arthemia theme you may have running on the site.

    @Ben Johnson – Its very quick and easy once the theme is up, for sure! Post ONCE and everything else just falls into place! :-)

    Super great video, Mark. :)

    I admit I was a bit lost when it came to configuring the theme but your video makes it seem alot less confusing.

    I especially liked the part about how to use custom fields – I certainly have been doing things the hard way in regards to adding images, LOL!

    Perhaps you could go into further detail about this subject in another video? Explain other ways we could utilize custom fields to make putting together a site easier? :)

    Hi Mark

    Fantastic post as usual. I have been looking at some of your sites and have admired the clean and simple layout, but could never figure out how you achieved such a great result. Thank you for sharing this great secret with us – it is much appreciated. Whilst I have dabbled in the PHP coding of some themes in the past, it has very much been on a ‘hit or miss’ basis. Your step by step instructions are clear and simple and demonstrate that while Wordpress was designed to get us uneducated people onto the net, being able to delve into the code moves you from a basic site to a real winner.

    Thanks again for a great post.

    Tony

    PS. I echo Caro’s call for some more information about custom fields as they seem to be great time savers and perfect for maintaining a standard format across your site. I would also be interested in more information in relation to changing the phpBay call page to other affiliate programs such as Amazon. Asking a lot, I know, but the information would really be appreciated.

    Thanks for the great video! I have certainly gone through it a few times. For those of us who are absolute newbies it might take a little longer to get it done but I am practicing on non-essential material while I await real content from my preferred author from TB.

    I agree with Tony and Caro on custom fields and diversification of affiliate programs just in case something happens to one of them.

    I know you are busy doing your own thing but we certainly appreciate the time you always take out to help us all.

    Many thanks!

    Hi Mark,

    Thanks for taking the time to create this video. I’m in the middle of making the modifications, but came up with a question that’s about 10 minutes into your video.

    In this portion of the video you instruct us to enter the category ID inside the phpbay code. Looking ahead, this appears to be a problem in my case and perhaps the case of other readers here. For example, the products in my niche can be associated with a couple of ebay categories.

    In fact, depending on what is being searched for in ebay, one category (ebay motors) can show more results than another one (business and industrial). So I was planning on entering in the specific ID as needed when I make the corresponding post.

    Is this a dead end for me, or is it possible for me to remove the post-listings.php file and insert the phpbay code in each post?

    Again, thank you for your time and help. Hopefully, this will help others, too.

    @ All –

    I will drop some of the cusomt field MODS I use in a future post… It TRULY makes life very easy!

    @Mark Sierra at MeAndMyDrum.com – Good point!

    The way the custom field works with phpBay works is this:

    < IF > [ebaykeys] is not blank < THEN > [get the keywords] and use the post-listings.php code.

    So… IF you DONT use the ebaykeys custom field, it will never call the post-listings.php file, and you just use phpbay long as you normally would on any other post. :-)

    Mark

  • Mark (author) said:

    @ All –

    Just to clarify that last comment a bit further – I DO have this coded for myself where I use several custom fields instead of the phpbay long code.

    I use a series of custom fields for several of the values, in order to get fully customized results:

    minprice =
    maxprice =
    catid =
    ebaykeys =
    sellerid =

    For ME, I find it easier to use the custom fields and more flexible for future use. For tohers however, it may just be easier to use the phpbay code.

    Purely a matter of preference.

    I don’t seem to have a cache folder so cannot change it to 777 or 755. Is it supposed to have this folder or not?

  • Mark Sierra at MeAndMyDrum.com said:

    Thanks for the reply, Mark. :)

    Once I got to the end of the video, I had an idea. If I understand your last comment correctly, it may be what you’re explaining, but just to be sure…

    Are you saying that just like the value “ebaykeys” is used for keywords, the code can be configured to accept another variable for the catid? If so, this would solve my issue, but I’m unclear as to how to do that.

    Oh and one more thing, please: at the very end of your video you briefly mention the ability to use “Image” in the custom field so that a thumbnail image is associated with the post. I tried that, but my image is not showing, so is a plugin needed or is it part of the Arthemia theme that does this and I’m just overlooking something?

    I really appreciate your help! :)

  • Mark (author) said:

    @Cherie – Cherie – you shouldn’t have to do anything, the folder is generated as the theme starts to work. I have never had to touch anything to do with the cache folder on a hostgator host.

    @Mark Sierra at MeAndMyDrum.com – The “ebaykeys” custom field, calls the include file. So, if you have one-off listings that are in different eBay categories than you put into the post-listings.php file, you can just NOT even use the ebaykeys custom field, and add the phpbay code directly into your wordpress editor.

    IF however, you WANT to use the custom field, and also supply a custom field for the catid of the listing for that post, it CAN be done as well.

    Here is a separate post-listings.php file

    Use it to replace the one I included with the theme. It has “4″ variables that can be passed to the code:

    1 – ebaykeys = “clock” [keywords you want to search for]
    2 – minprice = “250″ [minimum price of the items to be displayed]
    3 – maxprice = “750″ [maximum price of the items to be displayed]
    4 – ebaycat = “16115″ [ebay category of the items to be displayed]

    It relies 100% on the ebaykeys field being in place… meaning, if the ebaykeys custom field is not there, none of the code will be called at all.

    It is FINE to leave ANY other field blank as well… if the minprice, maxprice or ebaycat, is blank, it will just insert nothing into the code, and draw from EVERYTHING on ebay.

    We got there in the end. One thing, if I’m using an image from wiki or flickr etc. is it best to put a link below the image giving attribution or on the image itself?

  • Mark (author) said:

    @Cherie – Its a very nice gesture for sure if you are using their image. But I rarely actually use a “Link”, I just mention where it came from. “Image from Flickr”

    Mark, thanks for the video! Very easy to understand and works like a charm. I noticed one thing that I have a question about. I first noticed it on my site, then pulled up your site and see that the same thing happens, so I’m assuming I didn’t do something wrong.

    At the bottom of each post where it says “View All Your Category Title”, the titles for the different articles show but the first few lines under each title are from the current article being read. I probably make no sense – LOL. Just curious.

    Thanks again for sharing this and all the time you put into helping us all. My sites about ready and this mod makes it so much easier!

    Sherrin

  • Mark (author) said:

    @Sherrin – Sherrin – you found it! :-) Actually, I made changes to the uploaded files yesterday, right after I posted this and another reader brought it up as well.

    If you downloaded the theme prior to yesterday afternoon, you may have the residual content in place still. Which is apparent if you noticed the same text in the bottom of each single post.

    1 – If the theme is already installed, simply go into your theme editor, and open the single.php file:

    admin > appearance > editor > single.php file

    On line #36 you will see:

    < ?php the_content_limit(150, ""); ? >

    Just remove that entire line and save the file. You are done.

    2 – If you do not have the theme installed yet, no need to do this, it was updated in the code already.

  • Cherie said:

    I seem to have a bit of a problem pulling items from ebay. I see that there are 28 items but I’m getting nothing. I put exactly the same search terms into ebay itself and get results but nothing in the phpbay code. I tried with both the ebaykeys and the other code.

    Any ideas as to why this may be?

  • Mark (author) said:

    @ All –

    Anyone using the custom “post-listings.php” zip file I attached in these comments a few back, well… you may be wondering why they won’t display 4 auctions in 4 columns!

    Smack me… I left in a small bit of sidebar code!

    The download zip file file is already updated, but if you just want to edit the file you already have, open up the post-listings.php file and on line 14, you will see:

    echo phpBayPro($text, true);

    change it to:

    echo phpBayPro($text);

    Sorry for the error…

    One question. What about posts that don’t have any images attached? Or do they all need images? Because those with images are showing up on the home page at the top right, but those without have the missing image white square thing.

  • Mark (author) said:

    @Norbert – I have got the theme setup to NEED the image on every post, so if there is no image, it actually starts skipping other portions of the post as well, like the link.

    Next time I update and use the theme, I will code that out and make it optional. I didn’t even consider NOT using the images. Sorry about that…

    If you are using the geotargetting mod from the phpbaypro forum will it still work if putting in the category number in the post-listings.php page

  • Mark (author) said:

    @Charlotte – Good question I do not know the answer to Charlotte. I target US only, so I haven’t used the Geo Plugin.

    Do let me know if it gives you an issue though – I can jump into your site and see if there is a quick solution, which will likely be using a variable for the catid, versus a hardcoded id.

    Mark

  • Charlotte said:

    Thanks Mark

    I’ve had a look further through the PHPbay forum and it would appear that if you put a category number in for one country that is a different category number for another country then no listings show up. But having searched some more, luckily for the US and UK the cat number is the same, just a bit higher up the category tree, so I’m hoping that will satisfy the QPC for eBay, so eg, instead of targetting say “golf markers” with the appropriate cat number, it will have to be the cat no for “accessories” Do you think that will be ok?

  • Mark (author) said:

    @Charlotte – Makes perfect sense to me Charlotte!

    I tend to stay one level higher on most sites already anyhow, versus targeting EXACT categories. In most cases, the parent categories have more of the same products as well, and it can be narrowed with the keywords easily.

    Mark

  • Mark Sierra at MeAndMyDrum.com said:

    That’s so true, Mark, about going a level up. With so many places sellers have to choose from to put their listings in, it’s best to be general in most cases and then do the fine tuning with keywords.

    Hope you’re over your flu bug. If it was “swine” flu, did you take oinkment? LOL

    Hi there, I recently installed the arthemia theme. I’ve added some test posts. Great video, by the way. For some reason, I cannot get the images to load and I’m deparately hoping that you can take a look and tell me what I might be doing wrong. I have followed the instructions to a tee. Over and over again. Anything you can do to help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

  • Mark (author) said:

    @michelle – Michelle –

    It looks to me like you are using the FULL image URL in the custom field. With Arthemia, you have to remove the domain portion of the image location.

    Instead of:

    http://yourdomain.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/sexyback1-150×150.jpg

    Just use:

    /wp-content/uploads/2009/09/sexyback1-150×150.jpg

    Mark

  • michelle said:

    Thank so much Mark for the quick response :-)

    Well, that is actually what I was doing (i’ve tried it both ways and when I went to edit it again, it did not have the domain as part of the url, at least not in the custom field value) BUT, I did not have a forward slash before “wp-content” in the path, so I’ve got that now and it is still not working. I copied your path exactly. I think what your were referring to may have been the fact that in the post I also inserted the image. I just put up a different post called “trying sexy back” and I created the custom field with the value as you have noted. I did not insert the image into the post. Is there a place in the body (text) of the post where I have to reference the custom field. Something such as “insert custom field?”

    Could this have anything to do with the fact that I had to create a cache folder on the server and then change the access??? I dont know. I have no idea why this is not working. I have tried every which way it seems. Thank you again for your help.

    On another note, the theme tends to load somewhat slow. Is there a plugin or something else that you could recommend to remedy that?@Mark -

  • Ben Johnson said:

    @cherie – If you go to line 620 of style.css you should see ‘#sidebar h3′ you need to change background:#999999 to whichever color you want to show.

    Ben :)

  • cherie said:

    @ Ben

    thanks for that. however, I don’t seem to have that coding, mine is

    font:1.1em Arial;
    font-weight:bold;
    background:#333;
    color:#fff;
    margin:10px 0px 5px 0px;
    padding:3px 10px;
    }

    But further down is this

    #sidebar li {
    list-style:none;
    border-bottom:1px dotted #ccc;
    display:block;
    padding:2px 0px 2px 13px;
    background:url(images/sub.png) no-repeat 0 0px;
    }

    I did see somewhere that the black bar (that I want to change) is actually an image called sub.png but when I looked at it, it shows an image of an “L” shape done in dots, it’s not the solid bar. Do you know how to change that bit?

    thanks

  • Ben Johnson said:

    @cherie – Sorry Cherie, my fault, in the following:

    #sidebar h3 {
    font:1.1em Arial;
    font-weight:bold;
    background:#333;
    color:#fff;
    margin:10px 0px 5px 0px;
    padding:3px 10px;
    }

    Change: background:#333;

    To: background:#yourcolorcode;

    This will change the black background of the sidebar H3’s. The sub.png is just an image for the list items.

    @Cherie – Thats a function of WP 2.7+ and the pagination in wordpress comments. You can shut down comment pagination in the admin > settings > discussion > “Other comment settings” section. Just un-tick the “Break comments into pages” box.

    Mark,

    Thanks for the reply – turning the comments on and off seems so obvious now that you’ve pointed it out……I feel really dumb now!

    Thanks for all your help AGAIN.

    @Ray – Hey Ray – I use a plugin called One Click Close Comments (Link)

    It adds a red or green “dot” within your posts screen in WP. Click the “Dot” and it turns on or off comments.

    When a review comes in – turn it green, add the review, then revisit the admin to click the dot back to red.

    Thanks for the tip on how to change the colors in the theme.

    Hi Mark,
    With epn the way its heading is there a easy way to convert regular bans sites to wordpress without the downtime problem (rebuilding). I built two sites N1way and now wish I would have used wordpress as its easy to convert to amazon or any other affiliate program. These two sites are new but are indexed by google so I am starting to get the traffic. Thanks

  • Mark (author) said:

    @CoolGames Guide – In the stylesheet (style.css) – line 934 (.widget) adds a border around the sidebar widgets. Just remove the border code.

    @Rob – I find the easiest way to convert, is to build the wordpress site in a folder directory, like: site.com/beta/

    Once its rebuilt with all your content back in place (Copy-paste and rewrite) – just remove the bans file and relocate the beta folder onto the root of the domain.

    I wrote some step-by-step directions on this last year specifically for converting to phpbay, but it holds true for ANY wordpress move.

    Scroll down to the third or fourth paragraph, “Building a new site in the background” and follow from there.

    My categories don’t display under the review menu. Is there something that Im missing about getting tem to display in the menu at the top as dropdown?

  • Mark said:

    I get “no categories” for some strange reason.

  • Mark said:

    Ok I’ve went through the video again and now it will display only one of my categories in the dropdown. It also might be worth adding that the id’s of the pages are matching with id’s assigned to my categories so in the video you exclude 1,3,7 as the page id’s but if I do that it will exlude categoires 1,3,7..

    Right now only one category will display in the dropwdown none of the rest. I’m getting really confused with the video as what it says doesn’t work in practice. No categories dropping down :-(

    Hi Mark,

    This can be for anyone that has had this issue. My sidebar.php file for some reason ends up showing the following. This is all thats in the edit file box in wordpress.

    vti_encoding:SR|utf8-nl
    vti_timelastmodified:TR|29 Oct 2009 03:52:39 -0000
    vti_extenderversion:SR|5.0.2.4803
    vti_cacheddtm:TX|29 Oct 2009 03:52:39 -0000
    vti_filesize:IR|1501
    vti_backlinkinfo:VX|

    The only way to edit is to re-upload the file.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Mark,

    In using the Arthemia theme. When you show you items from ebay. How do you add the title above your auctions like you do on the Bike rack site?

    I show my items but your says something like “Yakima King Cobra Bike Racks on ebay”

    Thanks,

    Randy

    I noticed on the sidebar of this site that when you have any lists, you get a shape of a dotted L. How would you get rid of the dotted L on your sidebar if you didn’t want it anymore?

    Thanks

  • CoolGames Guide said:

    The reason why I ask, is because on my site, I get a dark dot for each list. I have no idea how to remove it.

    Mark,
    I have found all of your videos very helpful. I do have on suggestion however. The videos would be more helpful for me (and I assume others) if they included a pause feature. That would allow us do the updates as we follow the video without playing it over and over.

  • Mark (author) said:

    @Bob – Hey Bob, glad you enjoy the vids – there is a pause button in the lower left corner of the player.

    I’m having problems with the arthemia. After I activate the theme and click on visit site, I get nothing. I get a blank screen and it just stay there. I get the same result on two different sites.

  • CoolGames Guide said:

    When having lists using a widget, how do you get rid of the icon?, whether it be a square, or circle or in your case, an icon in the shape of an L.

  • Mark (author) said:

    @Bob – Bob – post up the URL or send it via email, it will be easier to help.

    @CoolGames Guide – Look for the #sidebar li definitions in the style.css file. It will determine what type of list style, or image to use for each list item (li)

    Hey Mark, when I activated arthemia all of my blog content got displayed except for the title, which remained “arthemia.” I realize after watching your video (which is great btw) that there’s a lot more I gotta do (I’m pretty green at this), but it seems odd that the subtitle of the page got placed while my name for the blog didn’t. Your thoughts?

  • Mark (author) said:

    @Patrick – Hi Patrick, it’s a logo image file in the header… so you need to create your own logo file to replace the one included with the standard theme.

    Its not like other themes that use text in the header… (Although it can also do that if you change the code)

    Does anyone know how to pull from both titles and descriptions from Ebay? I am only getting results from words in the title now.

  • CoolGames Guide said:

    I think the answer to my question lies within the homepage and not the sidebar widget.

  • CoolGames Guide said:

    What I did was move a widget to the home page, to have the home page act as a widget and now my list has a squares.
